  • I've used a tech 21 british as a backup for years. It works really well. I once used it as my main amp when the pub we were playing in was so small I could't fit my amp in.

not tweedy, but the Ethos Dumble in a pedal now has a version with a 30w amp built in

    http://www.customtonesinc.com/Page_10.html

You can use it as a pedal, or use the amp out too

In fact, another option is why not just use a 2 amp setup? Should be a better sound than one amp, and if you're carrying the gear anyway, why not use both? Or use one cleaner and one not, with an AB pedal?

or do you remember the Hughes and Kettner half-rack CF100

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=hughes+kettner+cf100&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=p3ZeUuW6JMLV0QWfsIGwDA&ved=0CC8QsAQ&biw=1920&bih=955&dpr=1

I had one, they are about £100 on ebay

100w SS, built to drive guitar cabs

there was a series of preamps, I had the lot, Bass master (Bassman), crunch master (80s Clapton sounds), metal master, cream machine (Hendrix)

If you buy one, or especially one with a preamp, I still have a 19 inch rack mount for them

Finally went for the Joyo American. So cheap I couldn't say no for a back up amp device which I hope I will never have to use :)

I'll let you know how I get on

Fantastic. The dirty lead tone is a bit too smooth for my taste, but the nearly-clean is wonderful - both are really good quality sounds though.

Very nice, Paulo, I'd be surprised if the "golden-ears" amongst us would have been able to tell it wasn't an amp. :)

I'm not sure how it compares to the Tech 21 but it produces a reasonable tone straight in the pc. I will try it with a few other guitars when my finger heals more (excuse for the shabby playing) :-) There is some speculation overr whether it has a speaker sim, I'm pretty sure it does have, the sound would be much worse without. I ran it through a software speaker sim and there wasn't a lot of difference in quality of tone. I think it sounds best on the edge of break up, the voice control seems to take it from an ultra clean twin through to a cranked bassman type tone. The drive can get a bit noisy on top when it's full on. I ran a tubescreamer clone into it with varying results. I'm still working out the best settings. I referenced the manual for the Tech 21 Blonde and the half dozen or so recommended settings and that helped. It does benefit from a bit of reverb in the mix though.

Ill be literally using it as a last result if my amp goes down at a gig. So I think this is an inexpensive answer to the problem. It's that edge of break that I love. Ill be pushing the rest with a clean boost pedal

Ill report back when I have had a play etc ;)

I'm not sure if I count as one of those, but I would have been sure it was a (very well-recorded) small amp with a posh overdrive pedal for the lead sound if you'd asked me. I still think it sounds like that even knowing what it is :).

It does, there's no way it would sound like that without. If it didn't have you'd notice a huge difference with and without the software sim.

I hear the higher-gain sound as more Boogie than Bassman - Boogies were derived from hot-rodded BF Fenders, whereas the Bassman (the Tweed one anyway) is more the starting point for that big Marshall crunch tone.

I agree about the edge-of-breakup sound, it's stunningly good. I've never heard anything as natural as that from any digital modeller either. (Please don't tell me this is all a con and it's a Line6 :D.)

The really odd thing is that if this is a copy of the Tech21, it's essentially the same as some of the circuitry from the GT-2... which I've owned two of and could not get on with at all.

Yes I've just edited to add the link to the results :)

I bought one recently and I've been very impressed with it.  I've tried it at a couple of rehearsals straight into the PA and I'm seriously thinking of using it permanently from now on instead of a "normal" amp.  Probably going to get a 2nd one as a backup ;)

After reading the thread I wondered what it would sound like if I just ran my pedalboard through a £30 Behringer GI100 Ultra-G DI Box which has its own speaker sim. I ran this straight to my audio interface. No EQ or any other processing in Reaper, just a straight recording of two clean tracks and one lead. Doesn't sound half bad, I'd use this into a PA if I had to.

Ah good plan.  It's never quite the same unless I've nearly ruptured myself trying to lug a 20Kg box in from the car park  :)
