I've had cars that are considered classics now but they were mostly cheap runabouts and/or rustbuckets at the time in the 1970's. Ford Anglia 105, Vauxhall Victor FB estate, Mk1 MG Midget, Austin 1100. I ran a 74 Rover P6 3500 for a couple of years in the early 90's. Lovely looking car and reasonably quick for such a heavy car, but it drank fuel and had horrendously heavy steering (no PAS on it !).

If I had the money (and a fuel tanker to permanently follow it around) I'd love a Jensen Interceptor FF.

@Bucket. Are you or Bucket Snr watching the Classic Car Show at the mo? On Quest or Dave I think. They did a feature on the SM last week, amazing cars.

Most fun I've ever had though was in my Austin Healey Sprite. 997cc ... mine had been fitted with a straight cut 'Sebring' close ratio gearbox. I learned how to four-wheel-drift in that car ... all round the country lanes of the Isle of Wight on those quarter-elliptic rear springs. Beautifully loud and fruity exhaust note that used to blare and burble on the over run. A proper sports car. Miss that more than my Les Paul Special come to think of it

Seems we had similar taste in cars. ">  My P6 looked nice from the outside: Arctic white with a tobacco vinyl roof. I'm sure the Leyland interior designers were on some serious drugs when they did the interior though, mine had burnt orange fabric seats and baby poo coloured carpets. :-&

I had a '62 997 Mk 1 Midget too. How it never got stolen I'll never know...no door locks, sliding perspex windows and the ignition barrel had the key permanently glued into it so you just turned the key and pulled the starter knob to get it going. I used a Krooklock but I was always wondering whether it would still be there when I parked it up. It failed it's last MOT spectacularly (on 19 different things!) and I got £20 for it in a part ex deal. Wonder what it would fetch now?

doesn't look like its got enough wheels to qualify as a car. In other words I've no idea.

This was actually my first car.

I think it'd qualify as a "classic" now.

 

Not quite as glam or oddball as most of the others ...

I still have the first car that I actually bought for myself - a Triumph TR6. Interestingly, my very first car, bought for me by my Dad, was the same as TTony's.

The best definition of "classic car" I've heard was from Nick Mason. He said a classic car was one that was "very desirable when it was new".

A car so desirable when it was new that there was a waiting list of five years, second hand value was greater than new as a means of jumping the queue, and supply had to be restricted to 'deserving' customers?
