I just realised the Scimitar GTE had the same 2.9L Cologne engine as Transit ambulances back in 1991 in the brief period before the turbo diesels were introduced.  Word is the Granada BOA 2.9 Cosworth was built for 350bhp but the car couldn't handle it so it was lowered, but the bottom end of the engine can if you wish to twin turbo it.  It also just bolts in a Transit with the old Transit 2.9L cologne adaptor plate and engine mounts.

    Ex Ford petrol head here........

The 2.9 Cologne bottom end is good for 450 BHP with no mods at all.
The top end is utterly incapable and it's weakest point is the cam belt tensioners.
Yes the Granada was dangerous at any serious power level but the Cologne engine is a solid lump and the crank and block are bulletproof.
Look to 'Burton Power' for mods to make this a fire breathing twin turbo monster.

Find one in an old Granada and you can pick up the entire car for under £200

    @chillidoggy

well done on an epic rebuild mate.
I used to be so far into this game when i had a garage and tools but those days are long gone.

Really nice to get a peek into someone else's garage and see this kind of thing again.

Right, must take the rose tinted specs off now before it costs me a fortune i don't have !

    Wow awarded @miserneil.

I had  a Consul back in the '70's but it was a very dull grey colour.

Later had a MKIII Zodiac I converted into a pick up.

Thanks chaps, she's a beaut and its a joy to get some nice weather to be able to take her out.

@Neil, this one used to be the classic 'Battleship' Grey but was re-sprayed before my ownership.

Drum brakes, column change, bench seat and vacuum wipers, a joy! :-)

All reasons why I much prefer to appreciate them by looking at them, rather than driving them!

As it happens, the green Scimitar I had originally had the 2.8 Cologne engine, but I converted it  and fits uprated 2.9 injection from a Grandad. It was close to 180bhp, and went very well indeed. I think there's photos of it earlier in the thread. One of the the guys in the owners club built one with a Cosworth DFA V6 in it.

Cheers @chillidoggy, that was my thinking too! I could never afford a Chevy Bel Air and Dagenham's finest pinched all of the best bits of the design anyway so the Mk 2 was the obvious choice!

Eddie Cochran was killed in a Ford Consul in Box so no more Rock n' Roll credentials needed for the humble Ford! :-)

Eddie Cochran Died in Chippenham right outside a friend of mine's house on Rowden Hill.
The Ford Consul was a Taxi and it blew a tyre and skidded into a tree. My Friend was only a kid and him and his Mum and Dad came running out of the house when they heard the crash to find Eddie dead, the Taxi Driver injured and Gene Vincent running around in agony with the choke knob embedded in his knee !

There is a plaque on the wall right where the crash happened.

    Quite a successful day today!

Weather was good enough to push the engine outside, and start cleaning it up.

I then had a good look at the broken bolt issue. Decided I was going to drill and tap it out to M10, then use a 10mm stud. I will need to relieve the new engine mount with a grinder a little bit, but it's eminently do-able. Having drilled it, I decided it definitely needs to be filled with some epoxy, so I've used Devcon alloy paste, and forced it into the hole as best I can. It'll take a few days to go off completely, but I think there's enough good casting for the tap to bite into, and it should support the stud reasonably well.

It'll be sexier when I've finished putting it all back together!

What amazes me is the sheer size of the engine with all the ancillary rubbish on it. I swear my 5.7 litre Chevy was more compact, and I'm not sure the weight was that different, either.

My two classics, the one of which I still own (Mini).

I had the Cortina years ago, sold it in about 2004. I spent most of my student loan doing it up and it was the coolest car in the uni car park. Road tripped it to Cornwall as well - awesome car, even as a lowly 1.6L 1975 round headlamped model.

I bought the Mini 6 years ago - it was MOT'd and as I found out, someone's unfinished project. The MOT ran out as I drove it around, and wound up undoing all the previous owner's bodges. I still have it; I ran it around for a while in 2011 after getting it back on the road, and it's been dormant in my garage for the past 2 years or so. Need to find the motivation to get out there and sort it out.

Or chop it out for a Gibson Custom Shop LPJ!!! ;)
