The official figures are good, but the real world figures are appalling. Have a look on Fuelly - the diesels average about 35mpg. My Yeti - about the same size, about as quick - averaged 45mpg.
Driving style counts for a lot too.
Now I've had my M135i for a few months I no longer drive it like I'm doing a lap of Silverstone.
My economy has gone from 24 to 33mpg.

It's pretty thirsty compared to most of the competition.

  • But in this instance he may have just drawn an incorrect conclusion based on a limited sample of data for that particular vehicle.  Perhaps in this instance these drivers were idiots.

You are perfectly correct. I may not have been very clear in my post what I meant.

I wasn't suggesting that the OP had confirmation bias I was just pointing out that it exists. Also it's not particularly a bad thing to have it, we all do in one way or another and it's not something that we have to label as good or bad, it's just a thing.

What I really meant to draw attention to, as you have picked out, was that people draw conclusions and make generalisations based on too small a set of data - and then the critical part - never update that conclusion based on new data.  In the same way that some people get into the habit of swearing a lot and not particularly noticing that they are doing it, some people have the habit of making generalisations based in insufficient data.

My intention was then to point out that when people suffer from anxiety, in almost all cases, they have the pattern of generalising.

For me the car thing has a particular strong association too. Many years ago one of my real close friends had a habit of really noticing bad driving, but only if the car was a ford. This built up to the point that he couldn't see a ford without saying "all ford drivers are f**king w**kers." It wasn't long after that that he had a mental breakdown and was sectioned. I'm not suggesting that his condition was caused in whole by his hatred of all things ford but based on my work now I would say that it would have been a contributing factor.

Having just done Edinburgh to Bristol in a Sport I suspect an Evoque would be less hassle. The sport is certainly nicer to drive than a Yeti, as is the Evoque, but give me a German car any day of the week. The bloody thing went into limp home 40 miles before getting back to Edinburgh. Last time I had to do "momentum" driving was in the 80s. Whore's parlour on wheels basically, but not a high quality engine at all.

Dunno about the Sport, but the Ewok is too heavy and numb to be considered as good to drive as a Yeti.

I get 38-39 if I drive my 635d sensibly around 80; I have just driven it like a real hooligan back from London- empty M40 - 32.
