That sums up my view of Jazz as well. Deliberately discordant self indulgent drivel.

I'm sure the army of jazzers will be spitting their coffee out "oh you just don't get it darling"

That's right I don't get it, just like I don't get some modern art which looks like it was paint blown through a plastic straw or is a house brick on a plinth.

    He's a bit of a dope.
Jazz is a massive genre and only bebop is remotely like how he describes it.
Swing and Dixieland are pretty tonal- there isn't the same sort of experimentation going on in those sub-genres.
It is like criticising all pop music as sounding like the Beatles.

    Bebop is brilliant, though. :)

    "OUR TOSSPOT"

  • I can't disagree with him there, I'm afraid. I have tried - I have so tried - to like that sort of jazz and I just don't get it. At. All.

Sorry to all the jazzers out there, but it's not for me.

Yeah but he's famous for talking shit and needs a slap. Jazz or no jazz. He's turned into a smug cyunt.

I was never a fan of Oasis, I can't stand Liam, but Noel I find a funny guy I have time for him.

Nope, sorry. I can appreciate the extraordinary skill it takes for Parker and Miles Davis to play in perfect unison on something so technically complex as that (if it is Davis as the accompanying pics suggest, I couldn't tell if my life depended on it), but otherwise, it does nothing for me.

    Sorry.

Is bebop really experimental though? I mean sure they might occasionally play a diminshes 7th where strictly speaking it should be a minor third but its not like they have a fuck off dub step bass solo or anything by and large its the same set of instruments playing the same stuff. In fact theres only about 3 tunes and they just do endless boring variations of the same "standards".

I can't help but like Noel Gallagher but jazz is a very broad church and, frankly, Noel is talking bollocks.

I think it's really funny what people think Jazz is.

I've had someone tell me with a straight face that they hate jazz and like proper music like Frank Sinatra.

    Err...

  • I'm not saying I don't like any jazz - I saw Humphrey Lyttleon's band not once, but three times, as well as George Melly and someone else whose name I forget, and thoroughly enjoyed them every time - just the atonal widdly stuff. And I feel that way about other forms of widdly widdly widdly, too.

But not that Derek Bailey stuff...I mean, he should be using the neck pick up for that, not the inbetween position. Seriously, ffs.

There's loads of melodic Jazz thats not elevator music. Its a huge genre.

Check out the bluesy stuff in the 50's 60's
    Kenny Burrell
    Miles
    Jimmy Smith etc

The older swing stuff like Benny Goodman and also Oscar Peterson is great.

    Modern stuff:
    Pat Metheny
    Julian Lage
    Avishai Cohen
