I'm sure the army of jazzers will be spitting their coffee out "oh you just don't get it darling"
That's right I don't get it, just like I don't get some modern art which looks like it was paint blown through a plastic straw or is a house brick on a plinth.
Jazz is a massive genre and only bebop is remotely like how he describes it.
Swing and Dixieland are pretty tonal- there isn't the same sort of experimentation going on in those sub-genres.
It is like criticising all pop music as sounding like the Beatles.
Bebop is brilliant, though.

Sorry.

I've had someone tell me with a straight face that they hate jazz and like proper music like Frank Sinatra.
Err...
But not that Derek Bailey stuff...I mean, he should be using the neck pick up for that, not the inbetween position. Seriously, ffs.
Check out the bluesy stuff in the 50's 60's
Kenny Burrell
Miles
Jimmy Smith etc
The older swing stuff like Benny Goodman and also Oscar Peterson is great.
Modern stuff:
Pat Metheny
Julian Lage
Avishai Cohen
