  • How come some of them don't have the yellow knob bit on the pickup toggle?

They're in the case for safe keeping to avoid damage :)

They ship with them in the case compartment as they are prone to shattering if knocked when being shipped.

Just screw them on when you get the guitar.

  • I think I prefer the look without the knob (lol)

  • That's pretty unanimous!
Do you think the top is worth the extra £1k or compares dimly to what some of you recently got in your r8s?
There are some nice R9s about but personally, I prefer the tops on the R8s we've seen. It's down to taste though. I've always liked flames and only recently have changed my stance...2 months ago, I'd have been all over the R9s. I have grown to appreciate the grain and understated nature of a plain top.

    Whoaaaa here..... ;)

Eveey time I’ve bought a new Gibson I’ve played each of the model I want in the shop and no two have felt the same at all. And the difference between my most and least favourite has been a chasm.

Please folks, do the right thing here. Go and play with your hands awake, your ears open and (as much as you can have) your eyes closed.
Yes and no. In my experience most of these R8s and R9s play well. I’d regret spending that kind of money for a below average looking super heavyweight.

Buying online gives opportunity to send back in the unlikely event it plays it sounds like a dog (and much greater choice than the stock in your local store, which is as much of a lottery).

The real monster top R9s over in the les Paul forum tend to have a mix of vintagey (ie not super straight and uniform) flame and complex grain. Rare to get both. There’s a 2014 R8 posted earlier on this forum that fits the bill better than most R9s on offer.

No doubt, but I no longer see the appeal of a flame and can't see myself buying one, personally. Never say never though! :-)

I would certainly hope so. For me at least, the differences between a great guitar that feels
just right and another great guitar that’s not quite for me can be really minor. I’d be wanting a play a few to see how they compare and I’d also be not at all surprised if one I didn’t iniatially look at won me over.

Ok . What's the difference between an R8 and R9?
    1 R
I though it was just 1

    R9
    ___
    R8

is surely 1 as the R is cancelled out
    Maths pedant! lol
For even more pedantic pedantry, numerically I think it is:

    1.125.

    It'd be an odd world if R9 ÷ R8 was 1.

    In purchasing terms, R9 ÷ R8 is:

    R8 + £1,000.
