Into the Wild is the one that stands out for me.

Someone else has mentioned Touching the Void

    127 hours

    Lawrence Of Arabia.

Star Wars   (that is true isn't it?)
Touching the Void is a documentary though.
DocuDrama, my friend.  Its a different thing.   It has actors and lovies and therefore cant be a true documentary like say Spinal Tap.
still doesn't count,  if he's having that then I'm having Grizzly Man

Waterloo is another good film .. cost a fortune to make. To save money the battle scenes were filmed in Russia. The government supplied 17,000 soldiers and a full brigade of cavalry ad built numerous buildings. Some amazing battle scenes in the pre-CGI days. The full version of the film that was shown in Russia is nearly 4 hours long.

This cavalry attack must have taken some planning ....

@Fretwired you are wrong. Waterloo is an awesome film.  I watched it on Christmas day, on my own, in a hut, in Afghanistan.

    #BestChristmasEver

Why am I wrong? I think it's a good film - saw it at the cinema when it came out.
@Fretwired , because it is an awesome film, not just a good film.  I am developing the idea of how good the film is to actually reinforce your point about the quality of the movie.

OK. I have it on DVD.

Checkout Sergei Bondarchuk's War & Peace, made in Russia in the mid-60's - he hired 120,000 Russian soldiers for the Battle scenes. There's a subtitled and overdubbed English version.

  • Loads of great 'classics' to think of, most of them already been mentioned I think. For something more recent, the Netflix film The Two Popes was excellent. Also the Chinese film The Farewell from last year, with the always hilarious Awkwafina, was a really heart warming true story.

Other recent-ish notable mentions would be Spotlight and The Post. Terrific casting and acting throughout both films.

  • Moneyball , a film about  building a great baseball team using statistics

King of Kong   The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is a 2007 American documentary film about competitive arcade gaming directed by Seth Gordon. It follows Steve Wiebe in his attempts to take the high score record for the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong from Billy Mitchell

Rockstar . Film loosely based on a singer in a tribute band  who goes on to join the band  he is paying tribute to.

Good call. I saw that once on TV years ago, but it had such an effect on me, I think about it quite often.

the Imitation game was an OK film but it was very much an over simplified version of events

We went to the National Museum Of Computing at Bletchley Park, and the chap conducting the tour said something along the lines of "there were only two accurate parts - there was a man called Alan Turing and a place called Bletchley Park" :).

That said it was still a well-made and enjoyable film.
