Favourite True Story Film?

I watched Hacksaw Ridge a while ago - what an amazing true story. It's about a young American who signed up and went to war but as a pacifist. He refused to carry a gun. Other soldiers hated him, the army tried court martial to remove him, but he became a medic and his role at Hacksaw Ridge is the most heroic war story I have ever heard. Superb film.

I didn't like Hacksaw Ridge at all, seemed like an afternoon Hallmark Channel movie somehow intercut with snuff porn. The weird shift of tone and concentration on gore was really odd. Half of it felt like a cheesy Christian movie, the rest totally over the top.

Standard Mel Gibson fare then. Is there any movie of his that doesn't involve someone (usually him) being stretched out and tortured by sneering bad guys while our hero screams in mannish agony.

I was going to suggest the same, with the following condition. Despite it saying “based on a true story” at the start,it’s not actually. Although that certainly adds to the “oh my god” factor when watching. The Coen brothers just stuck that in for effect, and when someone said “you can’t do that” they said “yes you can, it’s the movies”
