Just noticed they have trademarked the phrases “les paul” and “les paul artisan”

wonder if you could get away with “les Paul type”... it’s not infringing on their trademark!...
You could call it “less Paul” as our American friends are incapable of saying “les” ;)

That is excellent info so thanks - but looking at the following
     ® (U.S. Reg. No. 2528669)

Then anyone, I should say everyone, who has built an acoustic guitar is surely guilty - Martin, Taylor, Guild etc etc etc etc

Yet the following trademarks are interesting

    SNAKEPIT® (U.S. Reg. No. 3957037) - does Slash know ?
how about - HUMBUCKER - as Ash @OilCityPickups ; has pointed out

even crap items like DARK FIRE® (U.S. Reg. No. 3884397) -
    DUSK TIGER® (U.S. Reg. No. 3881696)

what about FRETLESS WONDER® (U.S. Reg. No. 0626204)

VINTAGE RE-ISSUE® (U.S. Reg. No. 1872419) - amazed you can register this

I've just seen the video on youtube this evening.
What a strange thing to do. I quite fancy a 355, but this has really put me off.

my hunch is the bar for registration is low, the test is in enforcement.

HUMBUCKER's a fair trademark in my opinion (2 words that wouldn't usually have an association).

but VINTAGE RE-ISSUE is nonsense, too descriptive. Don't think that would get registered in the UK.

I'd love a Dean Cadillac, Alex Skolnick from Testament used to rock one (don't know if he still does?) they are fantastic looking guitars and sound pretty damn good too.

Edit: I've searched the Internet but can't find anything on him actually playing one but I'm sure as hell that I've seen footage of him playing one.

I've always associated the Dean Cadillac with Sheron Alton from (the band) Toronto.  @FelineGuitars might remember them.

OK, maybe that changes it. My understanding is with trademarks that unregistered prior use doesn't prevent registration.

It seems I was confused, it wasn't Alex Skolnick but Eric Peterson of Testament that played a Dean Cadillac. I knew I'd seen someone playing one as that's where I first clapped eyes on one.

I think Fender trademarked the headstock but not the body shape, hence the various variations of headstock on copies.

However, Gibson releasing a Hendrix Strat-a-like was just idiocy!

Incidentally, the Flying V body isn't on Gibson's list, so the Dean Schenker ones are OK.

Mark Agnesi is, and has always been, a nozzle.

    Nozzle. I love that.

'Incidentally, the Flying V body isn't on Gibson's list, so the Dean Schenker ones are OK.'

Are you sure? I'm not, but then I'm generally bewildered & bemused by the whole sorry affair.

'On 14 May 2019, Gibson filed a lawsuit against Armadillo in the US District Court For The Eastern District Of Texas. The lawsuit, which was later amended on 6 June, accused Armadillo of trademark infringement over the Flying V body shape, Explorer body shape, ES body shape as well as the Hummingbird and Moderne trademarks."
