That’s what I thought too, at the time I was there, but it really has no affiliation whatsoever. The founders named it after FW Woolworth, and got away with it as the name hadn’t been registered in Aus.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woolworths_Group_(Australia)

Edit - I always liked the fact that Burger King was called Hungry Jack’s in Australia for years, as the owner of a takeaway already had the trademark and wouldn’t budge.
I stand corrected! Got me thinking of Ozzie stores now....E.g Grace Brothers. What was the name of the Australian Maplins..Dick something or other?
Dick Smith! My memory’s not what it was and that was bugging me too - had to look that one up :)

    My mum is from Tooting.

I was born in Tooting. Lived there until my mid twenties.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

I live in the South East and can recall that our “Pre privatisation” Electricity supplier (Eastern Electricity Board had a large appliance shop on our High Street. Think the “Gas Board” had one too.

Speaking of takeaways, anyone remember Spud-u-Like? Wimpy was nearly as dismal, at least the ones near me were.
I recall losing a tooth at the age of about 10 in the Manchester Piccadilly Gardens branch of Spud-u-Like.  Much blood, maximum potato n beanz.

As for Wimpy, I swear they had a dessert named the 'Brown Derby'.  Asking for trouble...
Hah! Didn’t they do a ‘Bender in a Bun’ too? PR wasn’t their thing maybe :)
I keep coming back to Streatham (sorry) but we still have a Wimpy in Streatham.  And both the Brown Derby and Bender are still on the menu....  I always liked Wimpy burgers, the Quarterpounder is in a brown bun which seems nicely un-American.

Yeah, Safeway only disappeared from the UK - still lives on in the US and Canada. Although Morrison’s sells Safeway-branded food to wholesalers. If you live near a McColl’s that’s a big stockist.
