Also I stand corrected re. Wimpy - I thought they'd long gone.  I haven't seen one in years.

The last Wimpy I was in was at the Johnstonebridge Services on the M74, about 3 years ago.

That was the day I took Our Maud to see a steam train at Galashiels - and they say the age of romance is dead!  :3

Long after the demise of Wimpy in the UK, they were trading in India. Not sure if that's still the case. India also had Dolcis (Shoes), they disappeared from UK Hight Street.

We used to have a corner shop called Circle K about 25 years ago near me, went to Bali last year and they were everywhere.

C&A are still in Slovakia too as are T Mobile.

    Private Shop(s)

Used to be all over the place (particularly Luton, for some weird reason), now food for crows.

EXCEPT up and down the A1, which is infested with the things.  Are North/South travellers particularly kinky?  Crazed with lust for herbal Viagra and rubber fists?  Baffling.

    Probably.

I’m pretty sure that Blacks and Millets are now the same. In fact, yes just checked; Blacks own the Millets chain

  • I can remember Boots selling ,records ,home computers , ghettoblasters,Walkmans  they even had a grinding shortwave top of the line radio in once with prope SSB reception.
you could get some decent records there too ,even the occasional special ones.

i remember Binns (house of Fraser) having records too and even reduced price coloured vinyl , I remember there being lots of UK subs ones , they also had chess computers and early video games .

I know I've posted this before but every time I go into a branch of Boots it's like being in somewhere that's about to close. It's owned by US company Walgreens so they may not want to hang onto it whilst profits plunge further and further.
I could be talking out of my arse but I do find Boots to be an allegory for UK approach to industry. Years ago, Boots was much more than a High Street Chemists - it had a Pharmaceuticals research arm, they discovered and developed drugs e.g. Ibuprofen. Then they break it up in the name of shareholder value, loose control of the profitable / future business and are stuck with an ailing High Street / retail only model with no USP?
