From memory I think that compressing them means there’s as much ‘string mass’ in a 0.42 string as a 0.46 for example, but it’s obviously a bit physically thinner, easier to bend and feels a bit more slinky.
I have tried a wound G a few times, hated it every time, but keep going back to try again as a few people rave about this. I find this makes the guitar stiffer and less dynamic and fun to play, and this isn’t even with lots of string bending stuff, but the only way to see if you like it is to try it yourself.
With so many comparison web sites out there, how do I choose the best one?
I asked if they knew the provenance of the guitar. Two of the assistants said that it's been on a few records from some obscure band (that neither of them had heard of). One of the assistants didn't know what "provenance" meant.
I didn't have the heart to ask them if they had gone through puberty yet.
The guy (aged about 8 or 9, I think) did know that they guitar is called "Clanger". I said, ""I know, the clue to the band's name is right there", he shrugged, I said "The Soup Dragons". He said, "don't get it".
The gal said, "really cool guitar, I love the cigarette burn".
I thought "game over"....
