I'm sure Branson is quaking in his boots :). McDonnell is an idiot. I've never known why Corbyn picked him for Shadow Chancellor - it always seemed like rewarding a crony rather than anything to do with merit.

Going up against Branson is not clever either. He may be something of the embodiment of a Thatcherite entrepreneur (although he actually started out long before that), but he's done a lot of good things and although his company runs a railway it's not his fault the Tories privatised it (twice) - at least Virgin seems to be one of the better operators.

Comparing him to Philip Green is insulting too - Green certainly should be stripped of his knighthood if he won't make good the BHS pension fund. He's a crook who has financially stripped a large UK employer and keeps the money in Monaco.
McDonnell has wanted to take the Labour over for years: he tried to run for leader twice, but didn't get enough nominations. He sees Corbyn as a proxy for his own leadership, and I suspect that Corbyn owes (or at least thinks he does) McDonnell for is support.

There's a good argument for giving them away initially and then selling them at inflated prices when they are hooked.

Rather like Mr Big in Live and Let Die with his heroin.

I hear he's trying to turn the Moon into a theme park.

    I don't rate his chances.

Anyone else see Ed Balls on Hardtalk last night?

What an absolutely monumental cock. (No pun intended.)

If the alternative is going back to New Labour I'd rather have Corbyn and accept sitting out the next election. Hopefully there is a third option...

    So much wis.

Should just be called liberal-ish now, they don't deserve the democrats title since the referendum.

Hopefully Farron will get the sack and let clegg back in, all of his flaws seem like nothing compared to Farron.

Well, if Farron were to go Clegg would have at least a 1 in 7 chance of being the next leader, as things currently stand.

Although leader doesn't have to be an MP (Farage)

I think the Lib Dem leader does have to be an MP.  The different parties all have their own rules about leadership qualification and elections.  If UKIP had the same rules it would have to be Carswell.

Which would be an enormous improvement on the current contenders.

He's a special case within UKIP. He sees a bigger picture within the political landscape (his reaction to the short money post-election for instance), he has the wider perspective that many in his party do not. As a straight-up leader then I agree but I don't think UKIP need that kind of leader. They need someone who can unite and I don't think he has that ability to bring all the dribs and drabs together, which is not damning him but reflective of some of the chuntering within the party.

Corbyn wins with a slightly increased majority.

When this all started a couple of months ago I thought Corbyn retaining his position would just intensify the divisions in the PLP, but in the last few weeks I've been getting the feeling it's beginning to settle down.

I'm not saying the divisions are healed and all's fine and dandy, but I get the impression there's no wish at all to actually split the party and the "rebels" (all 80% of them) have been worn down, they've realised there's not much else they can do so they're passively resigning themselves to their fate.

It'll all kick off again eventually, especially if and when this reselection/deselection process begins.

From seeing what has gone on in Bristol this week, I think the selection process will be far quieter than we have had in Labour circles over the last three to four months. A couple of councilor suspensions made for interesting viewing. As much as the PLP need to accept the legitimacy of the leadership vote, so the Corbyn-Momentum side need to accept that those rebel MPs were legitimately elected via a public vote and that moves to deselect them would look decidedly shitty.

Come together, all form a queue behind Corbyn. If you get whipped in 2020, then you can dump him but continued griping and grumbling will only weaken the party further.

I can't make sense of it.

Does the fact that Corbyn and Labour's popularity seem to have some inverse relationship mean that the "left" isn't really left at all, but just "anti-Tory"? Or do the public actually like Corbyn, but just not the rest of the Labour party?

The LibDem support seemed to implode after the coalition, and with Labour seemingly shooting themselves in the head again, where is the opposition to the Conservatives? Or will the LibDems be the new "left"?
