  • Said on the news that FIFA standards do apply to friendlies. I think between March and now the administrators at FIFA have changed, same rules but a new interpretation.

Clearly the answer is to not schedule international matches involving UK sides on armistice day. This isn't a new issue so why wasn't it taken into account?

    FIFA double standards.

    From the BBC website...

Fifa has been accused of double standards after it emerged Republic of Ireland players wore a political symbol on their shirts in a friendly against Switzerland on 25 March to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising.

Damian Collins MP, chairman of the Commons' Culture, Media and Sport select committee, said he had called on Fifa to "clarify the issue".

The Easter Rising was an Irish rebellion against British rule, which lasted from 24 to 29 April 1916 and resulted in 485 deaths.

"That appears to be an absolutely classic example of leniency being shown to other countries," Collins said.

Nothing to do with Fifa as it was a friendly and not a competitive match. Those are the rules apparently ...

With some words of wisdom, in a foreign language they can't read.
More likely "Two world wars, one world cup'  - misspelled. English footballers don't seem to be the brightest people you'll ever meet.
Symbolism, though, isn't it? Some moody Arabic phrase which translates as "Chicken, whole or half, freshly plucked, from 10 dinar per kilo".
Some folks like water, some folks like wine.
    My feedback thread is here.

I meant it would have been UEFA though wouldn't it. It was a friendly between two European countries.

    **STOP PRESS**

The Irish Football Association are planning to wear the shirts again when they meet Azerbaijan in their World Cup qualifier on November 11.

They do .. but the government needs to do more. Thousands of ex-servicemen are homeless and in need of specialist medical care.

  • The sports journalist on the telly didn't seem to know the UEFA- FIFA divide over that, although you are right ( even if UEFA are still subject to FIFA rules). It'll be back to strictly FIFA interpretation for their qualifier though.

This too. The government treats ex-servicemen disgracefully - ideally there should be no need for charities to help them.

  • Exactly. The cost of looking after ex-servicemen should be part of the decision to take action.

If you aren't prepared to look after guys after you've blown their limbs off and fucked with their heads then don't do it to them in the first place.

I think the ban is ridiculous, and I'd be surprised if either team didn't wear it.

I wouldn't be surprised that if either team didn't wear it, then a lot of support for them would evaporate, even if only temporarily.

I also agree that there seems to be a growing expaectation that we wear them, especially those in the media, and I think that is alo ridicluous.

Correct @57Deluxe except it is the Republic of Ireland and not Eire, see article on RTE Sport website:  http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2016/1104/829141-fifa-fai/   A pity it was brought up in the House of Commons debate.  Politics should keep out of sport!  Or failing that, politicians should keep out of sport.

FIFA need to define what is permitted on International team jerseys.  And such definitions ought to be reviewed every few years to keep the rules relevant to the time.
