  • James Bay's album. Some of the songs that are not singles are better. Much better. I hope he won't turn out to be a one hit wonder.

  • Walking around a local record store and they were playing a singer/songwriter... really nice playing, thought why are they playing this in here? New guy I've never heard! So I whipped up SoundHound on my iPhone - turns out it was Phillip Phillips. Winner of American Idol a few years ago. All I could think was "holy shit someone won Idol and the record label didn't destroy them with a disgusting over produced covers album which includes one or two originals?!"

In fact I bought both albums on the spot.

Was actually looking for the new Maiden. Amazing what happens. They'd totally sold out of Maiden everywhere so... I took a gamble.

Keen to dig right into those!

    So much Van Halen :D

VH II is such a killer album.
It is!! I'd say you can't beat VH1... And I would like to know, where do you stand on Hagar-era VH?
Never really heard any! I honestly think VH II beats VH I though. Much better songs.

As for what I've been listening to today... this, again.

Punishingly miserable. The vocals throughout this album are the most genuine and potent expression of anguish and depression that I've ever found, and this track is the standout. Incredibly disconcerting, and also incredibly powerful. Some of it is incredibly high-pitched shrieking, some is more conventional black metal-style growls, some is a really weird crackly whine that sounds like he's trying to impersonate Yoda while breaking down in tears... and a little bit towards the end is a deep "metal" voice that sounds like he's taking the piss, which only serves to make the whole thing seem even stranger. And there's even some random quick "ooh-aah" noises occasionally, which sound like he's being punched in the guts or something.

It's difficult to put into words. Lots of people laugh at the vocals, and I do understand why, because they're so alien and come completely out of the blue... but really, given that the bloke is quite possibly mentally ill, I think it's a bit callous to do so.

Still stunning several years after all the fuss......
I want to heap praise on her but I don't want to overlook the massive role that her brother played.
