Eric - how many miles a year do you do?
Me? Or do you mean the Emp?

At the moment I do about 1500 miles per month which is probably the most I've done in my life. My diesel Civic is cheaper on fuel costs than my petrol Seat was doing that kind of mileage.

Cars mentioned on page one that weren’t the Civic:

    VW Passatt
    Toyota Auris
    Skoda Octavia
Renault Wind ( sportified Twingo )
    Ford Focus
    Mazda MX5
And everything Kia and Suzuki and Mitsubishi.

    So one of them.

Yeah, but they were suggested under different criteria.  Now I'm looking for something comfortable and and economic.

So, if someone keeps suggesting MX-5, eventually your criteria will have changed again, again and again, and the MX-5 will be the correct answer?

Just go buy one now, and save us all the time ...

    Reminder @Emp_Fab ;

It's about now that you're supposed to add a post asking for opinions on some random make/model that doesn't meet any of your previously stated critieria but which is now your preferred option based on no logic whatsoever ...

    ;)

Give him a chance. He's busy writing car make/models on little bits of paper before randomly picking one out of a tombola machine. He'll get back to us when he's ready.

No....  Actually, I'm waiting for someone to suggest a car that has a lovely comfortable ride that I can get for under £3-4K.

Have you considered that the lack of comfort may be

    a) the roads you are driving down

    or

    b) your posterior needs an inspection by a nurse?

The answer was and always has been, a Golf. If you don't have the budget to get a decent one then save.

Won't get more comfortable than that!

We could have a great thread about the progess of the restoration.  Wonder if it would look good with laminate flooring.

Alas, I can do nothing about the state of the roads or the state of my arse, so comfier car it must be.

I don’t think you’ve quite grasped the rules of this thread!

Emp wanted something comfortable and reasonably economical, designed for a fat old bloke with a penchant for wearing dodgy hats.

However, you suggested something that pretty much matched the brief.

This thread is all about trying to guess what completely random and unsuitable (for the stated brief) car Emp is actually going to buy, based on the uncontrolled sparks of brain activity and mouse clicking that control his life.

Of course, by “actually going to buy”, I’m not talking literally.

Well....   I just Googled "Mk5 Golf ride quality" and it doesn't get the most glowing of reviews.

So, something comfortable and economic, and about which no-one on the internet has ever said anything negative ...

So let me get this straight.....  You are dismissing all internet reviews ?   And how exactly did it not work last time ?
