One of my daughters is going to start to learn to drive.

I mention this as experience of the Emp deciding of something has lead to to wonder whether she'll pass her test and get her own car before he commits and actually gets one.

Here’s the thing, if ever you do buy a car, how the hell are you gonna fill the massive void in your life that the absence of this car-buying journey will surely leave??!

I just realised this thread was started in March...almost 3 months to buy a used car.  I think had Emp set his sight on a car that he wanted, even with a unicorn spec, it would've probably popped up by now.

tbh she could still be in one of these and have half a chance...

OK.... this is it.  I’ve decided.

I’m about to put a deposit on a 12 plate top of the range Civic EX GT in pearlescent white with panoramic roof, heated leather interior, sat-nav, electric everything, full Honda Main dealer service history, flawless MOT history and an automatic testicle massager for £7K.

    She’s stunning.

She’s also a 2.2 diesel, but I like diesels and....  fuck the negatives.

Did you read the Autotrader review? 3.6 out of 5. The first 'con' is "All sorts of problems with the driving position" and the second is "Jittery ride and so-so handling"...

What's the "she" thing? Have you suddenly become Roger Taylor?

I had one of those Civics, a 63 plate 1.8 Petrol VTEC Ti. It was decent, but I prefer my Beemer.

Nice car, shame about the engine.

It really does feel like a total waste of time trying to guide you...at least this is over, please be over, just go buy it, please.

Because small diesels are shit. They always have been, and no amount of government tax incentives changed that. The things they need to pass emissions regulations make them complex, prone to expensive repairs and actually no more economical than petrol in typical town driving. They will also soon be worth about as much as yesterday’s newspaper once pollution zones come in in many cities, so paying over the odds for one now is stupid.

Hmmm.   Bugger.  You reckon 7k is over the odds for that then?

It depends how you look at it.

Value is relative, in Europe used cars are much more expensive than here so relatively that is cheap.  Here, that is probably fair, however remember what we’ve said….the country and the world is moving away from Diesel (and petrol), but more Diesel.  It has become, and more each day, harder and harder to sell a diesel due to all the emission laws and bans coming into place.  Diesel cars are totally banned in some cities in Europe so you are buying a ticking time bomb which its price will plummet fast.

The world is heading towards electric cars, and fast.  If you are going to keep 1 combustion car, make it a petrol, one with big noise .

Because a lot of people here don't like diesel.
The only reasons I can think of not to get one are if you are near an ULEZ, or if you do nothing but short journeys in which case you'll clog the DPF.

Diesel sales are still as strong as ever, and all new internal combustion engine sales will end by 2040 anyway.

The Honda VTEC petrol engines are legendary for their reliability so the diesels don't look quite as good next to them, but they're still a reliable engine (the 1.7 isn't a Honda engine so I'm discounting that one)

Personally I'd still just get a Golf, but there's nothing wrong with the Honda
