Just getting in before everyone else posts it.

    Kid Charlemagne
Bugger! You beat me to it.  :)

I'll have to go to my next choice which is Robben Ford's live solo on The Yellowjacket's Monmouth College Fight Song.

Kicks off from the main theme at 1:36..

For me today it has to be Eight line poem - David Bowie, very simple but has a great "hollow" feel.

Best solo for me I reckon has to be Robben Ford Rugged Road. Starts at 1:27 - it’s mesmerising, where does he find those notes from.

  • Tonight it's either I've Never Glid Before by Steve Hillage on Gong's Angel's Egg, or Oh Sweet Nuthin' by Doug Yule on the Velvets Loaded.

And now I have to go and listen to Prince's solo on As My Guitar Gently Weeps, so will probably change my mind in 15 minutes.
    Again.

I have been aware for a long time that the music that I love most often doesn't seem to features solos as such, They always seem 'stuck on' to me...

This does raise the interesting question of what solos are for in any given piece. For me the ones that work  either authoritatively drive the narrative - from the samples above eg Carlton/Kid C. - or they define the texture  - eg Verlaine&Lloyd. Mostly, I agree, they do neither effectively. Occasionally they do both. Struggling for examples, FZ at his sublime best, maybe.

I've not listened to the Dweezil solo on the live version of Sharleena from YCDTOSAM for ages.

Love it, but it does give me an itch right in the middle of my head.

That is rather special isn't it

Not my usual 80's/90's metal thing, but I do love me some Dire Straits  :+1:

  • It's a toss-up between...

Kd Charlemagne (Steely Dan) or Venus De Milo (Television). Probably the latter. Both short and to the point.

The obvious answer is Comfortably Numb.

The less obvious ones that come to mind quickly are Tunnel Of Love (Bruce Springsteen, solo by Nils Lofgren) and These Are The Days Of Our Lives by Queen (Dr. May, obvs).

Edit: Lukather’s outro solo on Rosanna is also epic...

I’ve always loved this wee solo by Lukather with Greg Lake, and the outro solo as well. I often find it playing in my head which is the sign of a great solo I think.
(This is often credited as Gary Moore who does play on the rest of the album, but it’s definitely Luke).

It has and always will be 3 Days by Jane's Addiction. So good, its dancey and even has a breakdown and a build back up. Something special.
