Richard Lloyd - Ain’t That Nothin’ (Television)
Dave Gilmour - Fat Old Sun (Pink Floyd)
Clarence White - Time Between (Byrds)

  • The first solo on Television's Ain't That Nothing. Or maybe the second...... So many Television solos are contenders.
Ha - I just picked this and then went back through the thread and saw this. Lloyd and Verlaine are unbeatable for me. Totally bloody perfect!

    Pink Floyd - Dogs.

The ones already mentioned from The Wall are amazing as well but Dogs is my ultimate favourite.
And there in lies the problem - me too I love pretty much any solo played by David Gilmour ;)

Being nostalgic, most of Slash’s solos in the 80’s and early 90’s were melodically on point. I’ve seem him live a few times and the last time (with Myles) I felt like he’d become so technically proficient that the simpler melodic stuff bored him and he over played. Too many to name but Don’t Cry, SCOM and November Rain are obvious.

Not many lead guitarists build excitement and tension in their solos like Angus Young. He’s a master where that’s concerned. Someone mentioned Ride on- it’s a shame they didn’t do a few more slow burners like that with Bon.

Need your love so bad, Tornado of Souls (true metal masterpiece from start to finish), Texas Flood, Hotel California, Since I’ve been loving you, many many more.

...then of course all the instrumental classics where the entire song is effectively a solo....again too many but off the top of my head Lenny, For the love of god, now we’ve ended as lovers, Satch Boogie.

Mick Jones’ solo on Jimmy Jazz on London Calling. Two choruses of perfect for-the-song soloing.

I was going to post my usual DG - Fat Old Sun, but then I was reminded of Thin LIzzy's Cowboy Song (Brian Robertson) which is a big favourite, then of Dire Straits - Tunnel of Love, my favourite Knopfler solo. The solo intro to Another Girl, Another Planet by The Only Ones is magical, but tonight I'm going for Chas Jankel's little masterpiece on Ian Dury's My Old Man (1:50)

Just watching a Crossroads DVD and Desert Rose by Eric Johnson - the duet between the guitar and the bass in the solo is delicious.

Haven't heard that track but the fade out would be my favourite part of an Yngwie song too :P

I posted earlier but forgot about this: This is my favourite performance of instrumental guitar easily.

That's one of my favs as well, love that tune.

Steve Craddock’s solo on You Do Something To Me by Paul Weller is fantastic.

I also love the solo on the version of Broken Heart from Spiritualized Live at the Royal Albert Hall. It’s not guitar but it’s perfect

Actually, the solo on Chris Bell's I Am The Cosmos might just take it. Absolutely dripping with emotion, the sense of loss is palpable.
There's nothing vaguely flashy about it.  Hell, even I can play it, but in the context of the song, I think it's perfect.

My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....
